Android Framework engineer Adam Powell wrote recently about the Android Holo theme family.

Android 4.0 showcases the Holo theme family, further refined since its debut in Android 3.0. But as most Android developers know, a new system theme for some Android devices isn’t a new or uncommon event. For an Android developer, new system themes mean more design targets for their apps. Using system themes means Android App Developers can take advantage of a user’s existing expectations and it can save a lot of production time, but only if an Android app designer can reliably predict the results. Before Android 4.0, the variance in system themes from device to device could make it difficult to design an app with a single predictable look and feel.

We set out to improve this situation for the android app developer community in Ice Cream Sandwich and beyond.

If you’re not already familiar with Android’s style and theme system, you should read Styles and Themes before continuing.

Compatibility Standard

In Android 4.0, Holo is different. We’ve made the inclusion of the unmodified Holo theme family a compatibility requirement for devices running Android 4.0 and forward. If the device has Android Market it will have the Holo themes as they were originally designed.

This standardization goes for all of the public Holo widget styles as well. The Widget.Holo styles will be stable from device to device, safe for use as parent styles for incremental customizations within your app.

The Holo theme family in Android 4.0 consists of the themes Theme.Holo, Theme.Holo.Light, and Theme.Holo.Light.DarkActionBar. To use a Holo theme, explicitly request one from your manifest on your activity or application element. Your app will be displayed using the unmodified theme on all compatible Android 4.0 devices. The Holo themes may also be used as stable parent themes for app-level theme customizations.

What about device themes?

We have no desire to restrict manufacturers from building their own themed experience across their devices. In fact we’ve gone further to make this even easier. In Android 4.0′s API level 14, we’ve added a new public theme family to complement the Holo family introduced in Android 3.0: DeviceDefault. DeviceDefault themes are aliases for the device’s native look and feel. The DeviceDefault theme family and widget style family offer ways for Android developers to target the device’s native theme with all customizations intact.

Formally separating these theme families will also make future merges easier for manufacturers updating to a new platform version, helping more devices update more quickly. Google’s Nexus devices will alias DeviceDefault to the unmodified Holo themes.

Pros of this model

The T – mobile My Touch phone has the latest addition – the 3 G Slide. T – Mobile My Touch 3 G slide is equipped with a right slide keypad with Q W E R T Y interface. The symbols share space with the letter keys, but it gets easier to type faster once you get familiar with it. The T – Mobile My Touch 3 G Slide is fit with the latest rendering of Android, the 2.1 version, and has all the functions that the version is capable of. The ergonomic and compact phone also comes with a spanking new user friendly vibe that is incorporated in the feel as well as the sleek looks. The exceptional calling quality gets some points, as does the remarkably fast 3 G functions.

There are also some excellent additional applications, like the My Touch Music. The LG Lotus Elite is also somewhat similar in subtle ways.

Cons of this Model

The updates on the Fave gallery are not really up to date all the time, and the information is more or less redundant. The comparatively below par camera also takes away points.

Buy or Not???

Albeit not a leader of the Android pack in terms of flashiness, the T – Mobile My Touch 3 G Slide is a worthwhile buy, especially for first time smart phone users, the on par features as well as the interface, which is extremely on the user friendly side.

Pros of this Model

Performance in the model has been greatly enhanced. The design has been made superior to the previous, as well as the display. The dearth of key features which was palpable in the previous iPhone has been sorted, and the iOS 4 update is really useful as well.

Cons of the Model

Multitasking is not up to the mark, and one has to be inconvenienced in some way to multitask. The reception makes for a sub par call quality, and a case is required to increase reception. Also a 64 G B model would have been more on the spot. The 12 app limit on the home screen folders is also not much fun.

Buy or Not???

Its htc after all, and in spite of the spotty reception as well as the sub par call quality, the Sprint htc evo 4g scores points on design, features as well as performance.

Keeping your Android phone safe should be a key concern. You have tons of valuable data that is stored on that. Not only do you not want your personal information getting into the hands of the wrong person. You also do not want to spend money on replacing your phone. Lookout

The Lookout app has tons of security features such as antivirus, a firewall, and intrustion prevention. The best part is that they are extremely lightweight so they do not bog down your phone. Lookout out also helps you if your phone is lost or stolen. You can log into the web interface on any computer and track down your phone. You simply click the locate button and it will show where your phone is on map. Lastly Lookout also comes with data backup.

It will back up all of your personal data including contacts, photos, video, e-mail, and text messages.

WaveSecure

WaveSecure is another great security app which is similar to Lookout. WaveSecure lets you lock down your phone from the web interface so that it becomes useless if you have lost your phone. You can also display a message and sound an alarm. Just like Lookout you are also able to track down your phone with WaveSecure. You can set an auto-backup or trigger a backup remotely from the website. The one big feature that WaveSecure offers that Lookout does not is the wipe out feature. You are able to log into the web interface and remotely wipe all the data from your phone.

Protector

Protector is another great app but it’s different than the previous 2 apps.

Protector allows you to password protect any app on your phone, or any feature of an app. It’s a great security program that can be very beneficial for many users. Protector allows you to password protect any Android app. SMS, Gmail, e-mail, Settings, Photos, Calendar, Notepad, Chat…or anything else you can even want to put a password on is an option.

You are even able to protect just particular features of apps if you need to. There is no workaround that will put your apps at danger. Even using a task manager won’t prevent the apps from losing their protection. If you try to uninstall the Protector app, you need the pin code to do so!

The only complaint with this app is that there is no pin recovery. If you forget your pin you are totally screwed. That’s a big gamble so just make sure you have it somewhere.
